Got a hair cut (ok trim) and need a new job...
Jun 11, 2003

Yep. I'm looking for a new job--hopefully a better one. I'm tired of asking not to be placed on 3rd shift anymore, and still getting it because the manager on 3rds doesn't want to work with anyone else. I'm also tired of them constantly hiring new people and bumping me down to two days a week (both 3rd shift). They now have 3 new people willing to work 3rds, one of which has replaced the weekdays 3rd shifter who's gone to 2nd shift (although I asked to not have 3rds first), and the other of which the 3rd shift manager refuses to work with because she won't do anything but sit all night (nobody's tried telling her she needs to get her butt up and do some work). This isn't even mentioning the time they passed my request over for another worker (who placed her request to be off 3rd shift a day after mine). The worst thing about that worker getting it and not me, is that she's a bar hopper. She doesn't like 3rds, and she wants her Saturdays and Sundays free. My reasons are that I'm a mother, I don't like 3rd shift, and I'm tired of having to go to work and be away from my son for a full shift and then come home and either be grouchy until my fiancé gets off work (and daze through my day) and on top of that, sleep another full shift. They take 2 shifts worth of time away from my son and I, and they only pay me for one, not to mention the tips suck (you'd think drunk people would accidently leave more money than they intended? Usually, they just forget to tip). Anyway. Tired of the tiny hours and the "rewards" of being a good employee.

Applying for office jobs (without a resumé--stupid move), 1st one that never got a resumé said they didn't have anything for me, but they would put a note in the computer that I followed up on my application. I'm waiting for another one to come in the newspaper, and attempting to write a killer resumé on top of that. Thing is, I'm not really certain an office job is for me either. I would love to get a job at the bookstore (even though it is minimum wage and still technically a labor job), I love books, I love connecting people with books, and I love dealing with customers--I've discovered that little bit. Even though there are the bad ones you just wish you could throw out the door, they don't hold a candle to helping the rest. Food is food. I enjoyed being a server until I got stuck on 3rd shift and cut on hours--mostly the 1st part though. But books...now I can help people, and I can help them in an area I am passionate about. Well, at least I could if I got a job at the bookstore. If only...I would love to work in the kids' section of the library, but you need a degree in library sciences to get a job there. The librarians there now are barely helpful when you ask for help looking for a book. I realize they've other things to do, but that shouldn't steal their focus away from the kids--the customers. Paying attention to them now, and sincerely helping them out could mean the difference between a lost soul and a future customer (yes, I know, over dramatic wording *big grin*). At the very least though, I'll take a job as a server in another restaurant (perhaps a more expensive one so I can at least get better tips). My main objective though, is to get off of (and permanently away from) 3rd shift.

Another nice thing would be some kind of job at the local forest preserves, even if it is just cleaning up trash in the woods. I love nature, it's another thing I am passionate about. You probably need a degree or special training for anything out there too, but it's worth a try if you really care. I'll be going out there soon to investigate the kinds of jobs I may be able to get.

Wish me luck ^_~*
